
Play N Skillz
You already know that TrillSouth has been supporting the homies Play N Skillz for more than a minute now. You can catch me with the camera at a lot of their events or in the party being friendly and meeting people. Well with the recent visit from MTV and myself there’s been plenty of news coming from the duo, including another Grammy added to the mantle. IRVING – Local rap duo Play*N*Skillz sit inside the sleek recording studio on the second floor of a rented house smack-dab in the middle of an affluent, gated community. The two brothers, Juan “Play” and Oscar “Skillz” Salinas, are dressed in predominantly red garb. Skillz likes his bling: earrings, watch, bracelet, silver ring. Play keeps his red cap tilted to one side of his head.
Play, 28, is the mouthpiece of this duo. His tone is authoritative; he’s got plenty to say and isn’t afraid to speak his mind. Younger sibling Skillz, 26, has a shy demeanor and the huskier voice. He mostly nods a lot, piping in every so often.
The club DJs turned rappers are red-hot right now. They’ve won two Grammy Awards as rap producers, the first for Houston rapper Chamillionaire’s hit “Ridin’” in 1997 and the most recent for Lil Wayne’s megaseller Tha Carter III, for which Play*N*Skillz co-wrote and produced the smash single, “Got Money.” They were recently spotlighted during a special program titled Dallas Week on MTV. As artists, the duo’s second album, Out Tha Box, which follows 2004′s The Process, should be released this summer. Read the rest of this entry »
